NEWBORN SESSION GUIDE

NEWBORN photography SESSION GUIDE

BOOK EARLY!

We can’t stress this enough! Book as early as possible, preferably as soon as you know your due date! As you get closer to your due date, you will have so many things on your mind, that it will be easy to forget to book or we’ll have no more openings. Remember, newborn sessions need to happen within about 5-12 days of birth, which is a pretty small window! To ensure we can fit you in, book at least 2 months before your due date!

PLAN TO HAVE YOUR SESSION WHEN YOUR BABY IS 5-12 DAYS OLD.

The ideal time for a newborn session is 5-12 days after birth! When booking, we typically select a day about 7 days past your due to have your session (give or take a day or two). Don’t worry – if your baby arrives a little early or late, just let us know and we will move your session to accommodate you. This actually ends up happening more than half the time! Because it has been our experience that babies seldom arrive precisely when we expect them, we account for that by not scheduling sessions every day, which gives us that flexibility to change your session date as needed. This way, you can book early and relax, knowing that we’ll be ready for whenever your little one arrives.

WHY 5-12 DAYS OLD?

This is because at around 2 weeks, newborns very quickly lose the ability to be posed while asleep. Many newborns (about half of them actually) also develop neonatal acne at around 3-4 weeks.

WHAT IF MY BABY IS ALREADY OVER 2 WEEKS OLD?

No problem! There are so many adorable ages to photograph! In fact, we’ve put together a short list of what we believe are the best times to have photographs in baby’s first year. Please remember that any time is a great time for photographs of babies because, well, quite frankly we think they’re pretty darn cute at any stage! And of course, we are more than happy to have your session whenever you like.

newborn photography by james thomas long4 Months: This is a great age! 4 month old babies are smiling (much more than at 2-3 months) and are able to prop themselves up well on their bellies, which makes for some super adorable images!

This is also when we can have your session in the great outdoors! If you’ve already done a newborn shoot, this would be our recommendation for your second session.

ALL NEWBORN SESSIONS TAKE PLACE IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR HOME.

Newborn sessions take place in the comfort of your own home, so you don’t have to worry about packing up things you’ll need. We’ll bring everything needed for your session, including backdrops, hats, headbands, props, lighting, posing blankets, and of course, cameras. While having great window light and lots of space can certainly help, it is not a requirement. We have setup newborn sessions in small, relatively dark spaces as well and can create beautiful images anywhere.

HOW LONG IS THE SESSION?

Typically, newborn sessions last approximately 4 hours. This allows time for feedings and time to get baby to sleep.

We’ve got quite a collection of absolutely adorable hats, headbands, buckets, boxes, blankets, wraps, and baskets, so you don’t have to purchase anything for the session – we’ll bring it all to you! Of course, you are certainly welcome to purchase (or make!) some of your own to incorporate into the session. We especially love props with sentimental value.

CAN MOM, DAD, & SIBLINGS BE IN THE PHOTOGRAPHS?

couple with newborn baby photographyCertainly! We always include the whole family (unless of course you prefer it to be just baby). We encourage you to peruse our blog to see a handful of images from each of our newborn sessions to get a feel for the variety of images from individual sessions. Typically, you can expect about 30-40 final images from your session.

HOW DO I PREPARE?

3-4 weeks before your session, we’ll talk to go over details to help make your newborn session a huge success, such as setting the right temperature in your home, outfits, your goals for the session, feeding considerations, and any other questions that you have. And if you have any questions before then, feel free to contact us!
